Light Stimulus Frequency Dependence of Activity in the Rat Visual System as Studied With High-Resolution BOLD fMRI

Abstract: Van Camp, Nadja, Marleen Verhoye, Chris I. De Zeeuw, and Annemie Van der Linden. Light stimulus frequency dependence of activity in the rat visual system as studied with high-resolution BOLD fMRI. J Neurophysiol 95: 3164 -3170, 2006. First published January 4, 2006 doi:10.1152/jn.00400.2005. The neurophysiology of the rodent visual system has mainly been investigated by invasive and ex-vivo techniques providing fragmented data. This area of research has been deprived of functional MRI studies based on blood o… Show more

“…The patterns of visual responses in the adult P60 rat brain generally followed as previously described [5,6]. In particular, activations by flash to either eye showed that responses were localized mainly to the contralateral superior colliculus, and sometimes the contralateral and ipsilateral visual cortex (Fig.…”

“…One factor that could have influenced the absence of any observed BOLD activity in subcortical visual structures in our study is the nature of the CS used in our experiments. An fMRI study of the frequency dependence of the rat visual system (Van Camp et al, 2006) found that BOLD response in the superior colliculus was greatest at higher frequencies, and reduced at low frequencies. In contrast, the visual cortex showed no such reduction in BOLD response at low frequencies.…”

“…necessary because of the following: whisker stimulation is a weak physiological stimulation that produces in the best case 0.3% BOLD signals at 4.7 T in our setup, and this is small compared to other stimuli like electrical forepaw/hindpaw stimulation (6% (Spenger et al, 2000)) or visual stimulations (3.5% (Van Camp et al, 2006)). Iso has been shown to be suitable for fMRI studies (Hess et al, 2007;Sommers et al, 2009).…”
