Lightning-ignited wildfires and long continuing current lightning in the Mediterranean Basin: preferential meteorological conditions

Abstract: Abstract. Lightning is the major cause of the natural ignition of wildfires worldwide and produces the largest wildfires in some regions. Lightning strokes produce about 5 % of forest fires in the Mediterranean Basin and are one of the most important precursors of the largest forest fires during the summer. Lightning-ignited wildfires produce significant emissions of aerosols, black carbon, and trace gases, such as CO, SO2, CH4, and O3, affecting air quality. Characterization of the meteorological and cloud co… Show more

“…This indicates that the aerosols in regions for intercontinental transport of trace gases can play a role in the occurrence of LCC lightning. This is not surprising, as it is known that aerosols participate in the electrification of thunderstorms (Tao et al, 2012;Pérez-Invernón et al, 2021a;Liu et al, 2021, and references therein). Despite this observation, we are not able to propose a possible mechanism to explain the relationship between LCC lightning and aerosols.…”

“…Each group of tasks is important in terms of minimizing damage from forest fires. This is equally true for the Russian Federation, Canada, Australia or the countries of Southern Europe [111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125]. Perhaps, for the Mediterranean region, these tasks are even more important, since catastrophic forest fires have been observed there in recent years.…”

“…The choice of criterion ∆t (from 1 to 10 days before ignition) is based on the possible duration of the smoldering period [16]. The choice of 𝐷 𝑚𝑎𝑥 is based on the value of stroke location accuracy in the WWLLN data (from 5 to 10 km) [19]. We choose a circle radius of 10 km with a center relative to the fire location (hotspot).…”

“…Thunderstorm activity and its role in fire occurrence has been the subject of a significant amount of research in different regions of the world: in boreal forests and permafrost zones [13][14][15][16], in mountain regions [17], and in tropical and subtropical ecosystems [18][19][20].…”
