Lightweight Material: Aluminium High Silicon Alloys in the Automotive Industry

Abstract: Al-high Si alloys are well known for their use as lightweight components in engineering applications, particularly within the automotive industries, due to their high wear resistance and low thermal expansion. It is desirable to increase the hot strength of these alloys by increasing the Si content. In this work, I have concentrated on the use of Al-high Si alloys for land vehicles. The automobile, engine components, the piston engine, four-stroke cycle and Al-high Si alloys in automotive applications will be … Show more

“…Since it is related to important factors such as product performance and price, the choice of materials for the product is critical. High-strength steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, plastics, and composite materials are all lightweight materials [15][16][17][18]. Lai et al [19] focus on the recent experience achieved by Fiat in introducing HSS up to reach a share higher than 60% in weight applying and developing new methodologies to solve in the design phase any criticality arising from the use of this material.…”

“…For example, rapid solidification increases radically the silicon solubility in aluminum lattice. High‐silicon aluminum alloys are used in applications where a low coefficient of expansion and increased wear resistance are needed, for example, in automotive engines . Nano structuration is normally introduced by mechanical straining of materials by technologies of severe plastic deformation or excessive cold deformation (rolling, extrusion).…”

“…If there is 12.6 wt.% Si in the Al-Si alloy, it is the eutectic alloy. The alloy is hypo and hyper eutectic if the percentage of Si in the Al-Si alloy is lower and higher than 12.6 wt.%, respectively [9,10]. The mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys are enhanced in higher Si added alloys, but after the eutectic composition, the strength properties start to deteriorate, as coarse polyhedral particles appear after eutectic composition, which is in fact, primary silicon [11].…”
