Lignicolous Marine Fungi from Chile

Abstract: Fungi occurring on intertidal wood collected from 16 sites from Arica to Punta Arenas in Chile were identified. Thirty-three Ascomycetes (6 unidentified forms), one Basidiomycete, and eight Fungi Imperfecti were found. Twenty-eight and 15 species are reported for the first time from littoral regions of Chile and South America, respectively. Corollospora maritima, Halosphaeria appendiculata, and Monodictys pelagica occurred throughout the coast of Chile. The absence from all sampling sites of Trichocladiwn achr… Show more

“…We observed a change in marine ascomycete community composition with latitude in both Texas and Florida, similar to patterns found in other geographical locations for marine fungi 54 – 56 , as well as for Ingoldian mitosporic ascomycetes 57 , 58 , and freshwater ascomycetes 41 . The studies of Hughes 50 and Booth and Kenkel 55 both examined larger geographical regions.…”

“…He also found that the species composition of Ingoldian fungi in streams sampled at the northern latitudes were more similar to each other than either of them was to the southern subtropical region in Japan. Shearer and Burgos (1987) found a change in species composition of lignicolous marine fungi along collection sites between north, central and south Chile. They found that some species occurring in northern subtropical Chile did not occur in the anti-boreal southern part of Chile.…”

“…Initialy this was focused on temperate water fungi, especially wood-inhabiting taxa (Jones 1968;Schaumann 1968Schaumann , 1969Schaumann , 1975Grasso et al 1985Grasso et al , 1990Cuomo et al 1985Cuomo et al , 1988Shearer and Burgos 1987) with fewer studies in more recent years (Petersen and Koch 1997;Panebianco et al 2002;Abdel-Wahab 2011a, b). The most intensive collections were made by Koch and Petersen (1996), Lintott and Lintott (2002), Jones et al (1998), Jones (2010) and AbdelWahab et al 2008 who reported 75 (Denmark), 38 (New Zealand), 92 (Friday Harbour, USA) and 41 (Italy) fungi, respectively.…”
