Lignin Synthesis, Affected by Sucrose in Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) Seedlings, Was Involved in Regulation of Root Formation in the Arabidopsis thanliana

Abstract: Adventitious roots (ARs) have an unmatched status in plant growth and metabolism due to the degeneration of primary roots in lotuses. In the present study, we sought to assess the effect of sucrose on ARs formation and observed that lignin synthesis was involved in ARs development. We found that the lignification degree of the ARs primordium was weaker in plants treated with 20 g/L sucrose than in 50 g/L sucrose treatment and control plants. The contents of lignin were lower in plants treated with 20 g/L sucro… Show more

“…However, whether ethylene signal being involved in drought and salt adaptation is needed further analysis. In previous study, it is founnd that lignin synthesis has a great in uence on ARs development through sucrose pathway [22,23]). In this study, we found that overexpression of NnWOX1-1, NnWOX4-3 and NnWOX5-1 did not NnWOX1-1, NnWOX4-3 and NnWOX5-1 affecting root development of Arabidopsis was not resulted from synthesis of IAA, ABA and lignin.…”

“…Light and photosynthetic products (sucrose) is also found to have a great in uence on the formation of ARs [21,22]. It is reported that lignin is involved in lotus ARs formation, which is also regulated by sucrose, suggesting that the development of ARs also has a complex regulatory network in lotus [23]. In addtition, ABA and cytokinin are also found to be involved in ARs formation [11,24].…”

“…Plant root development is negatively correlated with lignin content, and excessive lignin accumulation inhibits the development and elongation of roots in the case of Arabidopsis and carrot. Treatment of plants with exogenous IBA resulted in decreased lignin accumulation and increased root length [ 52 ]. Lignin content not only affects root development, but also affects fruit size.…”

“…8). Indeed, it has been reported that lignin deposition and overaccumulation negatively affects root growth (Cheng et al ., 2022). According to previous studies, auxin participates in the regulation of cell wall modifications, including lignin deposition (Majda & Robert, 2018).…”
