Like bees around the hive

Abstract: We introduce and present findings from field trials of MapLens, a mobile augmented reality (AR) digital-physical map system. In our trials we enlisted a mix of 37 earlyadopters, environmental researchers, scouts and their families to use MapLens, to play an environmental awarenessraising location-based game. A comparative trial was run with a non-AR digital system. Analyses of videos, field notes, interviews, questionnaires and user-created content expose phenomena that arise uniquely when using AR maps in the… Show more

“…However, the in-game elements need to be staged well if they are to sustain engagement. For example, a mobile augmentedreality (AR) map study by Morrison et al [43] incorporated competition between teams. This helped to sustain interest in the study, which included a sequence of repeated tasks.…”

“…More control, on the other hand, may be needed if the participants could inadvertently exit the 'bubble' of the exaggerated research setting or if, despite feature promotion, they do not use the desired features frequently enough. The last approach was taken in the above-mentioned mobile AR map study through gamification elements added to the interface [43].…”

“…In studies I have participated in conducting and publishing so far (Peltonen et al, 2007;Peltonen et al 2008;Morrison et al, 2009) we have presented cases how to collect and analyze data from multi-touch display installed for several months in public space and used by thousands of people in contrast to pervasive game that was used to evaluate collaboration with a still unstable mobile AR prototype.…”
