Limitations of FDG-PET and FDG-PET With Computed Tomography for Detecting Synchronous Cancer in Pharyngeal Cancer

Abstract: To analyze the ability of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and the fusion of FDG-PET with computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) to detect synchronous upper gastrointestinal tract (UGI) cancer in newly diagnosed pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Synchronous UGI cancer is a significant problem in treating pharyngeal SCC, particularly for Japanese populations reported to be at high risk. Good results have been reported from the use of FDG-PET and FDG-PET/CT in staging head … Show more

“…26,27 However, PET-CT adds to significant radiation exposure, which is 5-10 times greater than a normal background radiation. 25 The survey subjects in our study were in agreement with the fact that PET-CT was better in identifying the tumor location, size, and activity. SPECT traces a single radiation and not a simultaneous double one, unlike PET.…”

“…Hence, claustrophobia is one of the main disadvantages of PET scan. 25 This practical issue was well understood by our respondents. Tumor localization is one of the greatest challenges in any diagnostic modality.…”

“…42 There are also reports on finding synchronous double cancers. 43,44 Additionally, there are reports that PET/CT has high diagnostic performance even in diagnosing postoperative recurrence. 45,46 Other reports described that treatment strategies were changed by a PET diagnosis, and some cases avoided surgery after detecting a distant metastasis by PET.…”

“…A significant limitation of 18 F-FDG PET imaging is the accumulation in inflamed tissues, leading to false-positive results (15). D-18 F-FMT proved to have no accumulation in turpentine-induced inflammatory tissue in a mouse model, whereas 18 F-FDG displayed significant uptake and retention (11).…”
