Limited Medial and Lateral Approaches to Treat Stiff Elbows

Abstract: Open arthrolysis is an effective way to treat elbow stiffness. However, previous approaches led to significant surgical trauma. The goal of the current study was to evaluate the outcome of open arthrolysis with limited medial and lateral approaches combined with hinged external fixation to treat elbow stiffness. A total of 18 patients (18 elbows) with elbow stiffness were retrospectively reviewed. The same inclusion and exclusion criteria were used for all patients. Preoperatively, the mean flexion arc was 43°… Show more

“…The implications of Table 4 require caution as all but one study that used a hinged external fixator in addition to the open procedure was performed at the same medical center where apparently a hinged external fixator is used as a standard procedure. [ 20 , 23 , 25 27 , 30 , 32 ]…”

“…In order to avoid instability after arthrolysis, some surgeons use the technique of hinged external fixation. Zhou et al [35] In all these studies, the hinged external fixation provided stability for the elbow immediately after the surgery, which allowed safe and early exercise [38][39][40].…”

“…The flexion-extension range improved by 102.4°, and the average MEPS increased by 44. In all these studies, the hinged external fixation provided stability for the elbow immediately after the surgery, which allowed safe and early exercise [ 38 40 ].…”
