Limiting food waste via grassroots initiatives as a potential for climate change mitigation: a systematic review

Abstract: An estimated 30%–50% of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted each year. These global food loss and waste (FLW) annually generate 4.4 Gt CO2-eq, or about 8% of total anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and thus present a still underestimated driver of climate change. To date, little is known about grassroots initiatives dedicated to reducing and preventing FLW and their actual potential to prevent FLW and thus contribution to mitigate GHG emissions. This paper presents a systematic re… Show more

“…Food waste recovery and redistribution initiatives are sustainable, usually local bottom-up [25], practices in supply food chain that provide consumers with otherwise wasted food [9]. We found that these local practices, which very often combine the aims of providing food for people in need while reducing the environmental impact of binning perfectly edible food [26,27], can be found worldwide in a large range of sizes, types of management and redistribution (Table S1 available with identification of all organizations found online).…”

“…Last but not least, a review on 'Limiting food waste via grassroots initiatives as a potential for climate change mitigation: a systematic review' focuses on the role of grassroots initiatives in reducing food waste and thereby mitigating climate change (Mariam et al 2020). From a quantitative perspective, the study found that grassroots initiatives have the potential to reduce GHG emissions by 4.3%-8.2% of the food sector's emissions.…”

“…The government cannot lead all changes, nor should it be expected to do so. Community-based initiatives are critical in ensuring that system transformation takes place-from reducing consumption to changing disposal habits (Grabs et al, 2016;Mariam et al, 2020). Within Qatar, there are a number of such initiatives, such as efforts seeking to reduce plastic consumption as well as efforts to support companies to transition away from plastic usage.…”
