Limits to the Precision of Atomic Lifetime Measurements
Elmar Träbert
Abstract:The mean lives of certain levels in atoms or not so highly charged ions have been measured with a precision on the order of 0.1%. This is better than most other atomic lifetime measurements, but is still much less precise than many measurements of other entities. Why is it that atomic level lifetime and transition rate measurements are not much more precise?

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
