Limnologie du fleuve Bandama, Cte d'Ivoire

Abstract: In recent years, the Bandama river and its catchment area have been subjected to intense limnological research, in the framework of a program of ecological monitoring of aquatic environment, treated with anti-simulium insecticides (W.H.O. project for Onchocerciasis control in West-Africa).The present contribution summarizes the information collected on this tropical river. After a brief description of the basin and its geological setting, climate and hydrology, results of studies on the water chemistry, biolog… Show more

“…The Bandama river has a low slope gradient all over its course. It is characterized by alternating riffles and rocks (Mérona, 1981;Lévêque et al, 1983). The study zone comprises the main course of Bandama River with two man-made lakes (Kossou and Taabo), and the main tributaries, which are the Marahoué on the right bank (550 km) and the N'Zi on the left bank (725 km).…”

“…In the downstream area of Konkouré River (Guinea), Hugueny et al (1996) also noted the homogeneity of ichthyofauna and that no noticeable changes in the assemblages occurred relative to the width of the river. On the Ogun River (Nigeria), like Bandama River (Côte d'Ivoire) and African tropical rivers, the weak slope on a major part of courses could probably favor the homogeneity of fish fauna (Mérona, 1981;Lévêque et al, 1983). The variables most frequently influenced in the multilinear regressions between habitat and fish assemblage descriptors were those related to river size (flow velocity and distance from source) and diversity of the substrate.…”

“…The Marahoue River (550 km length) and the N'Zi River (725 km length) are the only tributaries of the Bandama River. On its course are the two hydroelectric dams namely Kossou and Taabo man-made lakes (Lévêque et al, 1983). The climate of the hydrosystem is an equatorial transition zone with two rainy seasons (April-June and September-November) and two dry seasons (July-August and December-March) (Iltis & Lévêque, 1982).…”

“…Seven species, M. chevalieri (Roux, 1935), M. dux (Lenz, 1910), M. felicinum Holthuis, 1949, M. macrobrachion (Herklots, 1851, M. raridens (Hilgendorf, 1893), M. thysi (Powell, 1980) andM. vollenhovenii (Herklots, 1857), inhabit streams in Ivory Coast (Monod 1980;Powell 1980;Lévêque et al 1983).…”

“…The author mentioned the existence of certain specimens of M. vollenhovenii with carpus and merus having the same approximate length. This may have led to confusion about the identification of M. macrobrachion and M. vollenhovenii, two species that are morphologically similar and are often found in sympatry in lagoons (Ville 1970;Marioghae 1982) and in streams (Lévêque et al 1983;Gooré Bi 1998).…”
