Abstract

Th e last voyage of the Carnegie (1928)(1929) was to be a truly global cruise and include oceanographic sampling of seawater and planktonic organisms. In the U.S., oceanography was relatively underdeveloped at the time and fulfi lling the ambitious goals relied on advice, equipment, and training from many foreign individuals and institutions, making the last cruise of the Carnegie an early example of international collaboration in oceanography for the U.S. Image courtesy of the Carnegie Institution of Washington D.C.
