Limnology of the Crater Lake Cuicocha, Ecuador, a Cold Water Tropical Lake

Abstract: Cuicocha (3380 m a.s.l.) is a young, a few hundred years old volcanic lake in the western cordilleras of the Ecuadorian Andes with some post-volcanic activities, such as emission of volcanic gases and input of hydrothermal water. Water chemistry is influenced by the emission of CO 2 and weathering of the young andesitic rocks in the water shed. A calcium cycle exists in the lake with intensive biological Ca precipitation at the flanks and formation of travertine crusts, while in the hypolimnion dissolution of … Show more

“…Examples are the African lakes Monoun, Nyos and Kivu, the carbonate lakes in Italy (Carapezza et al 2008;Chiodini et al 2012), Kelut lake on Java (Bernard and Mazot 2004;Caudron et al 2012;Mazot and Bernard, this issue) and Quilotoa and Cuicocha lakes in Ecuador (Fig. 9, Aguilera et al 2000;Gunkel et al 2008;Gunkel and Beulker 2009).…”

“…In Lake Taal, hydrochemical conditions and mixing patterns are greater influences to phytoplankton productivity compared to other factors such as zooplankton grazing (Rott et aI., 2008). Similarly, in other caldera lakes such as Lake Cuicocha (Ecuador) and Crater Lake (USA), zooplankton occurs down to deeper waters due to increased mixing from thermal vents (Gunkel & Beulker, 2009;Larson et aI. , 2009).…”

“…The suspected eutrophic state prior to the introduction of FCs may be a result of volcanism. Volcanic bottom layers show geothermal activity and are nutrient rich, releasing fluxes of geomorphic Pinto the water (Golterman, 1973;Tailing & Lemoalle, 1998;Ramos, 2002;Amarasinghe et aI., 2008;Gunkel & Beulker, 2009). Some suspected thermal vents in Lake Taal are located in the OW areas (Ramos, 2002), and their geothermal activity may enhance vertical mixing and contribute to increased primary and secondary production (Amarasinghe et aI.…”

“…Ecuadorian continental waters are believed to comprise a biodiversity reservoir of enormous global significance [48]. Nevertheless, studies focused on microalgae from Ecuadorian freshwater systems are scarce and taxonomy studies only take into account its morphological features [11,49].…”
