Abstract: As a megadiverse country, Mexico harbors 4 to 8% of the flora of the world and of this, 51% is endemic. There is concern because several factors are impeding its conservation. In this paper, areas of endemism for the flowering plants of Mexico are identified to prioritize regions for conservation. To categorize zones for preservation, the approach followed takes biodiversity, weighted endemism and evolutionary history into account. Lineages of angiosperms, families, genera, and formal or informal groups within… Show more

“…Interestingly, some of these southern areas that exhibit high habitat stability in E. compacta , harbour as well high levels of endemism and species richness for diverse flora and fauna characteristic of the Chihuahuan Desert (Rzedowski, ; Dávila et al., ; Del Conde Juarez, Contreras‐Medina & Luna‐Vega, ; Sosa & De‐Nova, ). Many of these endemic species have speciation dates or show evidence of demographic expansion during the Pleistocene (e.g.…”

“…The Chihuahuan Desert (Figure 1a) is the largest and southernmost warm desert of North America (c. 360,000 km 2 ) and the only one that reaches inter-tropical latitudes at its southern extent (Morafka, 1977;Shreve, 1942). Remarkably, disjunct communities that have strong biota affinities with the core areas of the Chihuahuan Desert are common on its southern limits (D avila et al, 2002;Rzedowski, 1973;Sosa & De-Nova, 2012). These areas include the Quer etaro and Hidalgo (Mezquital Valley) semideserts, the Cuenca Oriental at the eastern edge of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB), and the Tehuac an Valley (grey shaded areas in Figure 1b).…”
