Line profile analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction data of iron powder with bimodal microstructural profile parameters

Abstract: Room-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction and subsequent detailed line profile analysis of Fe powder were performed for microstructural characterization. The peak shapes of the diffraction pattern of Fe were found to be super-Lorentzian in nature and the peak widths were anisotropically broadened. These peak profile features of the diffraction pattern are related to the microstructural parameters of the material. In order to elucidate these features of the diffraction pattern, detailed line (peak) profile… Show more

“…The importance of using this approach (by including the IRF) is that a maximum of four TCH parameters, I G , Y, U and X, are sufficient for determining the sample-related isotropic peak profile contributions, and this has been followed extensively in the literature (Thompson et al, 1987;Rodrı ´guez-Carvajal & Roisnel, 2004;Kaduk & Reid, 2011;Bhakar et al, 2017Bhakar et al, , 2021Denney et al, 2022).…”

“…WPPF is a relatively new method among BBMs and is regularly used for Rietveld refinement (Rietveld, 1967(Rietveld, , 1969. It has the advantage of simultaneous refinement of both structural and microstructural parameters (de Keijser et al, 1983;Young & Sakthivel, 1988;Lutterotti & Scardi, 1990;Bhakar et al, 2016Bhakar et al, , 2017Scardi et al, 2018;Bhakar et al, 2021). In this approach, however, empirical peak profile functions (like pseudo-Voigt) are used for profile fitting, limiting its accountability.…”

“…Recently, this beamline was used to study the microstructure of iron powder using line profile analysis. The super-Lorentzian peak shape of single-phase Fe powder was ascribed to two microstructures having different microstrains (Bhakar et al, 2021).…”
