Linear Massive MIMO Precoders in the Presence of Phase Noise—A Large-Scale Analysis

Abstract: We study the impact of phase noise on the downlink performance of a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output system, where the base station (BS) employs a large number of transmit antennas M . We consider a setup where the BS employs Mosc freerunning oscillators, and M/Mosc antennas are connected to each oscillator. For this configuration, we analyze the impact of phase noise on the performance of the zero-forcing (ZF), regularized ZF, and matched filter (MF) precoders when M and the number of users K are asy… Show more

“…In this section, we use random matrix theory to analyze the received signal in (23) as M → ∞. Importantly, the ICI and AWGN of the received PM signal after ZF detection are asymptotically analyzed to derive the phase noise cancelation performance.…”

“…In [15,22], the impact of phase noise on massive MIMO-OFDM uplink system performances has been analyzed for the single-user (SU) and multiuser (MU) cases. The MU massive MIMO-OFDM downlink system with ZF and maximal ratio transmission (MRT) precoding has been compared [23,24]. Recently, some phase noise cancelation schemes have been proposed for massive MIMO uplink systems [25,26] and for downlink systems [27].…”

“…It is worthwhile to extend the results to the frequency-selective downlink and to other linear schemes, such as regularized zero forcing (RZF) precoding in the downlink or MMSE reception in the uplink. Towards this research direction, prior work includes [77], where the authors use asymptotic random matrix theory and provide capacity bounds for the case of frequency-flat downlink transmission with ZF precoding.…”

“…Authors in [19] analyzed different HWIs with regards to the aggregate impact it has on the system. The impact of HWIs with regard to the number of local oscillators used at the base station is analyzed in [20] and [21]. HWIs are modeled as oscillator phase noise in systems studied in [22].…”
