Linear thermosensitivity of gel-immobilized tunable colloidal photonic crystals

Abstract: The thermosensitivity of gel-immobilized colloidal photonic crystals can be controlled by changing the mixing ratio of thermosensitive N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and non-thermosensitive N-methylolacrylamide (NMAM) in the gel network. Above an NMAM mole fraction of 0.4, the crystals exhibit linear thermosensitivity, a characteristic that makes them potentially useful in applications such as tunable photonic crystals and temperature sensors.

“…The structural color materials applied in sensors have been developed over the recent decades because of their facile fabrication and largely modied surface. These structural color sensors were usually constructed by responsive materials and could be tuned by corresponding stimuli, such as temperature, [122][123][124] humidity, [125][126][127] pH, [128][129][130] ions, [131][132][133] and molecules. 134,135 Inspired by Tmesisternus isabellae, Gu et al 136 assembled mesoporous SiO 2 nanoparticles (MSNs) as assembled colloidal particles.…”

“…In the resulting colloidal crystal, the effect of sedimentation time and temperature, solvent quality, and crosslinking degree on the reflected structural color has been investigated . A non‐thermosensitive comonomer together with N ‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) has been used to change the volume transition temperature, and silica photonic crystals have been embedded into it to make a thermosensitive photonic gel . Taking the idea of immobilizing nanocrystals in a PNIPAM hydrogel matrix, microfluidic hydrogel balls containing PS colloidal crystals have been prepared, which beautifully display a thermoresponsive color change due to altering the colloidal crystals spacing …”

“…For example, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) gel is one of the most important smart hydrogels that responds to the change in temperature close to human body. 28,29 When heated over 32 °C, the hydrophilic PNIPAM becomes hydrophobic, leading to shrinkage and release of its liquid contents. These properties are expected to be used as actuators for biological applications and controlled drug delivery.…”
