Linearization of the full activated sludge model No 1 for interaction analysis

Abstract: This paper deals with the linearization of the full activated sludge model No 1 (ASM1) in the scope of interaction analysis. For consistency, the linearization procedure is developed and validated within the BSM1 simulation benchmark framework. It is based on reaction rate approximation by linear combinations of states. The linear rate models are identified and incorporated in the mass balance equations, yielding a linear locally equivalent to the ASM1 model. Linear models for anoxic and aerated compartments a… Show more

“…In the last years, very simplified modifications of ASM1 have been developed for various practical applications. These simplified models involve reduced number of equations and variables (i. e. not all biochemical processes or state variables are considered), linearized reaction rates or other modifications [23], [24]. The aim of the paper is to investigate some properties of a simplified mathematical model of the wastewater treatment process with activated sludge.…”

“…Surveying the literature reveals that several simplified models using different plant configurations either through simulations or practically were implemented particularly based on the concept of the reference model (ASM1). Linearize models in [5] demonstrated effectiveness in tracking the responses of ASM1 and maintaining the states biological interpretations. Analytical model performed remarkably in predicting the process and conserved the nonlinear nature of the reference model [6].…”

“…Literature reveals that several models were developed for wastewater treatment process, for instance, activated sludge models (ASMs) family (ASM1, ASM2, ASM2D, and ASM3) which have proven to be indispensable tools within last decades, made a remarkable impact in achieving reliable treatment plant design, better understanding of system mechanisms and more importantly serves as guidance for research [1], especially the state of art model (ASM1) for carbon and nitrogen removal. Based on this mathematical model concept various models either practically or via simulation were developed [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. Nevertheless, most of these developed models were either applied to completely mixed tank or contact stabilization and industrial wastewater treatment plant.…”
