LINER‐like Extended Nebulae in ULIRGs: Shocks Generated by Merger‐Induced Flows

Abstract: In this work we studied the two-dimensional ionization structure of the circumnuclear and extranuclear regions in a sample of six low-z ultraluminous infrared galaxies using integral field spectroscopy. The ionization conditions in the extranuclear regions of these galaxies ($5-15 kpc) are typical of LINERs as obtained from the Veilleux-Osterbrock line ratio diagnostic diagrams. The range of observed line ratios is best explained by the presence of fast shocks with velocities of 150-500 km s À1 , while ionizat… Show more

“…We should note that, this ratio might also be affected by the presence of an AGN and by shock excitation as found in local (e.g. Veilleux et al 1995Veilleux et al , 1999Yuan et al 2010;Monreal Ibero et al 2006 and distant (Shapiro et al 2009) samples. However, according to the diagnostic diagram proposed by Veilleux & Osterbrock (1987) noted that [NII]/Hα values are available for only a fraction of the SINS sample and these are strongly biased towards the BX (i.e.…”

“…Mixing between AGN and star formation can also exist (Davies et al 2014b), but such mixing increases the [O III]/Hβ ratio more strongly, shifting points towards the Seyfert region of the diagnostic diagrams. By comparing these ionization line ratios in spatially-resolved spectroscopy to photoionization and shock models, it is thus possible to map out the shocked regions and identify the relative contribution to the luminosity from shocks, star formation, and AGN (Monreal-Ibero et al 2006, 2010Sharp & Bland-Hawthorn 2010;Rich et al 2010Rich et al , 2011Westmoquette et al 2011;Freeland et al 2011;Davis et al 2012;Fogarty et al 2012;Yuan et al 2012;Vogt et al 2013;Ho et al 2014).…”

“…For example, cloud-cloud collisions (e.g. Savedoff, Hovenier & van Leer 1967), tidally-induced gas streams (McDowell et al 2003;Colina et al 2004;Monreal-Ibero et al 2006, 2010Farage et al 2010;Zakamska 2010), and outflows and galactic winds from AGN or star formation (e.g. Heckman et al 1990; Lehnert & Heckman 1996;Lípari et al 2004;Sharp & Bland-Hawthorn 2010) can all produce radiative shocks to dissipate their kinetic energy (Allen et al 2008).…”

“…Also, the slit was positioned along a given orientation and therefore the results of these studies do not necessarily represent the excitation and kinematics of the ionized gas in the extra-nuclear extended (several kpc) regions. Instead, for the detailed study of the excitation conditions in the extended regions it is more appropriate to use the two-dimensional information provided by IFS data once the nuclear regions are removed, as already discussed for a small sample of ULIRGs (Monreal-Ibero et al 2006). We performed a similar study with the present sample of LIRGs, limiting the analysis to the data with [N ii]λ6584/Hα, [S ii]λλ6717,6731/Hα, and [O i]λ6300/Hα higher than −0.7, −0.8, −1.8, respectively (i.e.…”
