“…Published in 2017, a study conducted by medical geneticists and pediatric neurologists observed the absence of lingual frenulum in 4 (36.36%) out of 11 infants with the congenital Zika syndrome 19 . Conversely, a study conducted by SLPs reported that in a total of 54 infants with the congenital Zika syndrome, lingual frenulum visibility required a specific maneuver to retract the tongue in 20 (37%), since it was covered by mucous tissue 20 . The authors suggested the terminology "absent lingual frenulum" used by Del Campo et al 19 be replaced for "submucous lingual frenulum" 20 .…”

“…Specificity. Although some outcomes, such as lingual phenotype 177 or neurogenic bladder 276 , have been hypothesised as a specific phenotype for congenital ZIKV infection, no additional evidence was identified that certain congenital adverse findings are specific for congenital ZIKV infection.…”

“…The authors observed that all children had some form of dental manifestation, of which the most common were increased salivation, irritability, and gingival pruritus. Fonteles et al [17] evaluated the lingual frenulum of 54 children with CZS in Pernambuco and observed that many children had a posteriorly positioned lingual frenulum and, in some cases, the frenulum was hidden behind a mucous curtain.…”
