Lingual thyroid: the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: Lingual thyroid is an uncommon developmental aberrationof embryogenesis. It may present as a mid-line, non-tender, painless, reddish appearing swelling in the throat. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a relatively new diagnostic method for this condition. Two cases of lingual thyroid are reviewed with their MRI's and surgical results.

“…In sporadic case reports, ectopic thyroid glands showed a signal intensity slightly higher than that of muscle tissue both on T1‐weighted and T2‐weighted images and similar to the signal intensity of the normal thyroid gland (4, 5, 7). In our series, ectopic glands appeared as well‐defined masses of isointense or hyperintense signal as compared to that of muscle tissue on T1WIs and low to intermediate signal on T2WIs although frequently associated with small cystic portions.…”

“…There are few case reports on MR appearances in this clinical condition (4, 5, 7). However, to our knowledge, there is no literature in which MR findings of lingual thyroid were compared to those of other disorders occurring in the submucosal areas in the base of the tongue.…”

“…Lingual thyroid is best ruled out by I23 I or 99m Tc thyroid scans (Guneri et at., 1991). In our patient, the CT scan revealed significant calcification in the tumour.…”

“…Technetium-99 scanning and iodine-121 scanning should be performed to show the radionuclide activity at the level of the mouth and at the level of the normal position of the thyroid in the neck. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging [16,25] make it possible to estimate the gland size and position. Because of the location of the mass in our case, in the dierential diagnosis before surgery we took into consideration the possibility of ectopic thyroid tissue.…”
