Abstract:This article describes the undertaking of linguistic fieldwork, in which linguists study languages as they are spoken in a naturally occurring domain, rather than in a laboratory or via self-introspection. This article presents the history of linguistic fieldwork, the rise of language documentation as a major paradigm for fieldwork, fieldwork research methods, ethics and community relations, and data management issues.
