Linkage of the Pig Main Histocompatibility Complex and the J Blood Group System

Abstract: Linkage of the main histocompatibility complex (MHC) and the J blood group locus was demonstrated in pigs by means of segregation data in families of double back‐cross matings. A recombination frequency of 9.82% was estimated. No evidence of close association with the blood group systems A, B, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N and O was found.

“…Transplantation studies showed that the SL-A complex is functionally distinct and is not identical with any blood group system. This was also confirmed by linkage studies in which independent segregation of SL-A on 13 erythrocyte loci was detected (Hruban et al, 1976). In these studies, however, linkage of SL-A and J erythrocyte locus was found, but still remained to confirm SL-A linkage to the C blood group locus, which seemed likely from the studies of Andresen & Bake: (1964), who detected linkage of J and C blood group markers.…”

“…The report of loose linkage between the H locus and two other loci encoding red blood cell antigens -J and Chas led to speculation that the Hal linkage group might be on the same chromosome as the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) (Rasmusen, 1982). The C and J loci had previously been shown to be linked to each other and to the MHC ( S L A ) loci (Muir & Rasmusen, 1974;Hruban et al, 1976;Hradecky et al, 1982). The pig major histocompatibility complex has been mapped to chromosome 7 by in situ hybridization as well as by conventional linkage analysis between a chromosomal marker and the MHC (Geffrotin et al, 1984).…”
