Linking apple farmers to markets

Abstract: This study investigates the determinants of marketing contract choices and the related impact on farm net returns of apple farmers in China. We employ a two-stage selection correction approach (BFG) for the multinomial logit model. On the basis of the BFG estimation, we also use an endogenous switching regression model and a propensity score matching technique to estimate the causal effects of marketing contract choices on net returns. The empirical results reveal that written contracts increase apple farmers'… Show more

“…Apple cultivation is a natural reproduction process, and its growth requires sufficient water. However, most of China's apple production areas are distributed in the northern mountainous and hilly areas, where the climate is mainly dry and less rainy [5]. Therefore, the conditions of irrigation facilities are important factors affecting apple cultivation [28].…”

“…According to the Apple Regionalization Plan of China Agriculture Research System (CARS), China's apple production area is divided into five regions, including the Bohai Bay production area (including Shandong, Hebei, Liaoning, Tianjin, and Beijing), the Loess Plateau production area (including Shaanxi, Gansu, Shanxi, Ningxia, and Qinghai), the Yellow River Old Road production area (including Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu), the Southwest Cold and Highland production area (including Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Tibet), and the Special production area (including Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Hubei, and Xinjiang). Among them, the Bohai Bay and the Loess Plateau production areas are the advantageous apple-producing areas in China [5].…”

“…The propensity score matching (PSM) approach is commonly used in impact evaluation programs, in particular when self-selection occurs [28,29,30]. However, one of the major drawbacks of the PSM approach is that it accounts only for the selection bias resulting from observed factors.…”

“…The first grand theme relates to the dynamics of smallholder participation in contract farming programs. Herein, studies examine barriers and motivations for smallholder participation in contract farming (Lozano & Heinen, 2016;Selhausen, 2016), factors influencing the intensity of smallholder participation in contract farming (Selhausen, 2016), and factors influencing smallholder choice of contracts (Ma & Abdulai, 2016;Saenger et al, 2013). The second grand theme relates to the impacts of contract farming as a poverty reduction initiative.…”
