Linking knowledge search to knowledge creation: the intermediate role of knowledge complexity

Abstract: PurposeKnowledge search is considered a broad concept and semi-intentional behavior. The path and boundary conditions through which search strategies affect intra-organizational knowledge creation remain elusive. Drawing on recombinant search theory and knowledge-based view, the authors seek to identify knowledge complexity as an important intermediate variable between knowledge search and innovation performance, such as research and development (R&D) output and R&D output quality. A second goal of thi… Show more

“…Referring to previous studies (Li et al ., 2018), this study used the maximum likelihood method for parameter estimation by constructing a GEE model to obtain its regression coefficients. The GEE model is an extension of the generalized linear model which is widely used in management research (Hou et al ., 2022). It resolves the correlation problem for longitudinal data quite well, utilizing the results of each measurement in the longitudinal data and greatly minimizing the loss of information.…”

“…Planning the development direction of a firm is neither a mindless wheel nor an illusion; it requires systematic governance. Through the boundaryspanning search of advanced technical knowledge, firms can transcend narrow intellectual fields and precisely grasp the bigger picture of the industry (Keszey, 2018;Yu et al, 2020;Hou et al, 2023). From this perspective, technological boundary-spanning search can help firms improve their technical accomplishment and provide new strategic ideas for future innovation and development.…”

“…Innovative firms have to continuously acquire external technical knowledge to transcend internal innovation chokepoints (Liu et al, 2020;Shi et al, 2020;Leone et al, 2022). Thus, an increasing number of firms compensate for their weak internal resources through boundary-spanning search to obtain advanced technologies required for innovation (Hou et al, 2023).…”

“…Specifically, enterprises with digital capability can utilize digital technology constantly to acquire and integrate internal and external knowledge, optimizing and improving the boundary and process of knowledge search. The knowledge search then will increase the level of knowledge creation and organization innovation (Hou et al ., 2023; Medase and Abdul-Basit, 2020; Zhou and Yao, 2022). It may further help enterprises alleviate the risks brought about by uncertainty in the fierce market competition (Yin and Yu, 2022).…”
