Linking mantle plumes, large igneous provinces and environmental catastrophes

Abstract: Petrological studies of Siberian Traps and associated alkaline rocks reveal high temperatures (1600-1650 o C) 14,17 in their mantle sources. Olivine compositions in samples from lower units of the Norilsk lava section provide evidence that the mantle source of the Siberian Traps was unusually rich in ancient recycled oceanic crust 14 in agreement with earlier predictions 10 . For the main volcanic phase, however, such data were unavailable. Here we report 2500 new olivine analyses and host-rock compositions fo… Show more

“…Because the hydration processes would result in instability of subcontinental lithospheric mantle 56 , hydrated subcontinental lithospheric mantle cannot remain isolated from the convective upper mantle. Geochemical studies and thermochemical modelling suggest that the massive degassing of volatiles (CO 2 and HCl) in some CFBs mostly originates from recycled crust in the deep Earth 61 . These observations show that continental lithosphere cannot be the dominant reservoir that produces the observed hydrous and arc-like geochemical characteristics of these CFBs.…”

“…Recent studies suggest flood basalts may have mobilized carbon in thick deposits of organic-rich sediments, resulting in global climate change and extinction (4,5,7,(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). New work also suggests magmatic release of CO 2 from mantle-derived eclogite as a potential extinction mechanism (14). Svensen et al (15) were the first to discuss the mechanism by which basaltic interaction with organic sediments may cause mass extinction through explosive release of methane.…”

“…Соболевым и С.В. Соболевым с коллегами [Соболев и др., 2009;Sobolev et al, 2011] на основании петролого-геохимического и термомеханического численного моделирования пред-ложена более сложная модель магматизма СП, в том числе Маймеча-Котуйской провинции. Они счита-ют, что мантийная высокотемпературная струя транспортировала часть древней рециклированной оке-анической коры, которая продуцировала карбонат-силикатные расплавы, метасоматизировавшие корни сибирской литосферы.…”
