Diagnosis of fragmentation and landscape sustainability conditions are essential to environmental planning and sustainable management of natural resources. Land use spatial patterns and landscape structural indexes (landscape metrics, Urbanity Index-UI, and Landscape Vulnerability Index-LVI) have been proposed to assess biodiversity conservation and ecological sustainability, provided by impact of land use at Middle Mogi Guaçu watershed and its seventeen municipalities, in 2009. Land use typologies and structural indexes values were obtained based on screen digitizing of LandSat-5 imagery, for 2009. Cluster analysis and Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance were used to test the null hypothesis of equal degrees of fragmentation and sustainability conditions among municipalities in 2009, respectively. Land use spatial pattern showed a predominantly human occupation for watershed and its municipalities, with agricultural use as the main pressure factor. Municipalities were aggregated into three clusters related to forest fragmentation: one categorized by fifteen municipalities; the second cluster (municipality of Luiz Antônio) showing the best condition, and the third group (municipality of Araraquara) with extreme fragmentation condition. Landscape metrics related with shape, size, and core areas fragments intensify edge effects, and increase habitat isolation. The watershed showed a low naturalness and an intermediate degree of vulnerability. Ecological sustainability was different among municipalities (α = 0.05, F = 32.65 and p = 0.002), with two municipalities (Analândia and Luiz Antônio) presenting the best conditions. The most committed condition was observed, in municipalities of Rincão and Guatapará. For conservation policies to be effective must focus on the creation of ecological corridors around legally protected areas, besides creation of new legal reserves, with purpose to improve biodiversity conservation and ecological sustainability of Middle Mogi Guaçu watershed and its municipalities.

Abstract:One of the major consequences of expansive urban growth is the degradation and loss of productive agricultural land and agroecosystem functions. Four landscape metrics-Percentage of Land (PLAND), Mean Parcel Size (MPS), Parcel Density (PD), and Modified Simpson's Diversity Index (MSDI)-were calculated for 1 km × 1 km cells along three 50 km-long transects that extend out from the Adelaide CBD, in order to analyze variations in landscape structures. Each transect has different land uses beyond the built-up area, and they differ in topography, soils, and rates of urban expansion. Our new findings are that zones of agricultural land fragmentation can be identified by the relationships between MPS and PD, that these occur in areas where PD ranges from 7 and 35, and that these occur regardless of distance along the transect, land use, topography, soils, or rates of urban growth. This suggests a geometry of fragmentation that may be consistent, and indicates that quantification of both land use and land-use change in zones of fragmentation is potentially important in planning.

Abstract. The degree of similarity/dissimilarity between landscapes is important information for landscape classification, potential assessment and evaluation. In geographical assessments, similarity in landscape functioning and visual attributes is commonly analysed by using landscape factors (e.g., relief, water balance and soil fertility), land use and built-up area. In this study the similarity and dissimilarity of Hungarian landscape units were investigated to reveal the appropriateness and uncertainty of the current delimitation methods. Nine indicators for 230 landscape units, delineated by the traditional methods, were integrated into a data matrix. Dissimilarity coefficients were calculated for each unit to determine the Euclidean distance between all indicators. Dissimilarity analysis was performed by multidimensional scaling using Kruskal's stress test and hierarchical clustering. The applied method enabled a more objective determination of taxonomic distance. Based on the results, the similarity and dissimilarity of landscapes could be evaluated by more accurate and quantitative datasets. Several neighbouring landscape units should require increased attention in spatial planning because these landscapes differ from each other: they belong to different clusters based on the investigated indicators, though they are adjacent.
