Lipid Management and the Elderly

Abstract: Advancing age is an independent risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. However, the significance of hypercholesterolemia as a cardiovascular risk factor in the elderly, has been widely debated. While no large-scale, randomized clinical trial has been conducted to evaluate cholesterol lowering solely in the elderly, evidence from older subgroups in several intervention trials supports the efficacy of lowering elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol for reducing cardiovascular risk in th… Show more

“…Serum lipid levels correlate to illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. 122 An investigation into the effectiveness of Baduanjin on blood lipid and antioxidant levels 70,80 indicated decreases in triglyceride, total cholesterol, malonyldialdehyde, low-density lipoprotein, whole blood viscosity, low shear blood viscosity and plasma viscosity, in contrast to increases in high-density lipoprotein, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. Thus, these are able to ameliorate problems in the respiratory system.…”

“…However, studies in the field of geriatrics, still at an early stage, are uncertain as to the predictive value of risk factors (RF) for CVD in the elderly, particularly in those older than 75 years. Based on this, some authors are currently studying the relationship between the process of atherosclerosis in the elderly and a number of RF (Kannel 1996; Howard et al 1997; Williams et al 2002; Davidson et al 2003). Aging, high blood pressure (BP), dyslipidemia, and obesity are among the RF that may lead to endothelial dysfunction and, therefore, to vascular changes.…”

“…21,25,28 -36 In addition, recent research offers compelling evidence that chronic psychological stress and negative affective states contribute significantly to the pathogenesis and progression of insulin resistance, [37][38][39][40][41] glucose intolerance, 38 hypertension, [42][43][44][45][46] dyslipidemia, 38,41,47 and other IRS-related conditions 28,37,48 -55 and ultimately, increase risk for CVD morbidity and mortality. 28,32,43,44,46,52,56 -60 Not only can IRS-related conditions be exacerbated by lifestyle variables, such as smoking, lack of exercise, and poor diet, but these conditions can interact with one another in a destructive manner, 61 likely accounting for their synergistic effect on CVD risk. 9,62 Thus, a vicious cycle is initiated, which, as time goes on, becomes increasingly difficult to treat, highlighting the importance of early intervention.…”
