Lipids of Human Testes Removed at Orchidectomy

Abstract: Lipid and fatty acid analyses have been made on the testes of sixteen human subjects obtained at orchidectomy. About 60% of the total lipid was phosphatide, 12 % triglyceride, 6 % free cholesterol and 2 % esterified cholesterol. Phosphatidyl choline was the chief phosphatide present, followed by phosphatidyl ethanolamine. Other phosphatides were phosphatidyl serine, phosphatidyl inositol and sphingomyelin. The major saturated fatty acids found in the total lipids were palmitic and stearic while the major monoe… Show more

“…The polyunsaturated long-chain fatty acid DHA (C22:6ω3) is highly abundant in tissues that require increased membrane fluidity. Its presence in membranes is essential for sperm motility ( ), for the proper functioning of rhodopsin in the retina ( ), and for neuron function ( , ). To identify a protein that might be involved in the binding and trafficking of DHA, two tissues known to be abundant in DHA, testis and retina, were examined.…”

“…Although phosphatide analyses were not done in these particular samples, it has been shown in similar samples (11,14) that 50-60% of the total lipid is phosphatide and of this ca. 50% is phosphatidyl choline, ca.…”

“…Testicular tissue of adult humans contains a significant amount of lipid, and from 30 to 40% of the fatty acids of the lipid are polyunsaturated fatty acids (11). The major lipid is phosphatide, but triglycerides and free and esterified cholesterol, as well as glycolipids, also are present.…”

“…The adult mammalian testis and spermatozoa have long been known to be extremely rich in lipids containing polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with 18 to 22 carbons atoms, the latter predominating in the adult testis (22:6n-3 and 22:5n-6, depending on the species) [12][13][14][15][16]. These long-chain PUFA increase several-fold in the lipids of testis with the onset of spermatogenesis [17,18].…”
