Lipoblastoma of the left kidney: a case report and review of literature

A lipoblastoma is an infrequent benign tumor derived from embryonal adipose tissue. There are few reports on kidney lipoblastomas; there are fewer than three cases, including our case. An 80-year-old female was detected to have a left renal mass during a routine medical examination. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated a heterogeneous mass before surgery, and histopathological tests subsequently revealed that the mass was a rare lipoblastoma. We present this case as a reminder to consider lipoblastomas in the differential diagnoses of kidney masses.

“…1 Although other more rare tumors should be kept in mind, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, fibrolamellar carcinoma, undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, angiosarcoma, or embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, 2,3 intrahepatic lipoblastoma is not reported to be part of the differential diagnosis of a pediatric liver mass. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Imaging techniques, including ultrasound, computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging, may be ambiguous and do not always reliably differentiate benign from malignant tumors. 15 In our case, an open, peripheral biopsy of the mass was unspecific and differential diagnoses numerous (ie, all fat-containing soft-tissue masses in children, including benign and malignant adipose tumors as mentioned above).…”
