Lipoprotein(a) in Youth and Prediction of Major Cardiovascular Outcomes in Adulthood

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a common risk factor for cardiovascular disease outcomes with unknown mechanisms. We examined its potential role in identifying youths who are at increased risk of developing adult atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). METHODS: Lp(a) levels measured in youth 9 to 24 years of age were linked to adult ASCVD and carotid intima-media thickness in the YFS (Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study), in … Show more

“…This transfer of cholesterol from tissues to HDL is mediated by a membrane protein called ABCA-1 (ATP-binding cassette transporter-1), which transports cholesterol using the energy resulting from ATP hydrolysis. Cholesterol extracted from tissues is esterified by LCAT and migrates to the core of the HDL particles, so they become larger and less dense and are called HDL2 [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ]. HDL2 particles are transported to the liver, where they bind to receptors called SR-B1 (scavenger receptor class B1).…”

“…In this issue of Circulation , Raitakari et al 6 undertook an ambitious assessment of the association between Lp(a) levels in childhood and young adulthood and ASCVD occurrence in middle adulthood. To do this, they included data from 2 longitudinal cohorts included in the International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort Consortium: the YFS (Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study) and the BHS (Bogalusa Heart Study).…”
