Liposoluble portion of the red alga Pyropia yezoensis protects alcohol induced liver injury in mice

Abstract: The hepatoprotective effect of liposoluble portion of Pyropia yezoensis (PYLP) was investigated against alcohol-induced liver injury in mice. Fatty acids were predominant in PYLP obtained from hexane fraction of 70% EtOH extract after ultrasonication. In particular, polyunsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid and linoleic acid accounted for 56.91% of the total lipids. PYLP significantly reduced liver damage induced by the alcohol treatment in mice. PYLP treatment increased the activity of antioxi… Show more

“…The Bangiales (Rhodophyta) contains some of the commercially most important red algae that have been used for millennia and support multi-million dollars industries mainly in Asia (Kim et al 2014, Badis et al 2020, Dai et al 2020, Lee et al 2021. The order contains two morphological types in the gametophytes: a group consisting mostly of monostromatic blades, and a filamentous group.…”

“…Treatment with UD seed oil alone decreased the elevated level of MDA in the blood, and increased antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH), ceruloplasmin, vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene and retinol in the serum of CCl 4 -treated rats [ 83 ]. It was suggested that the properties of UD observed in the study, such as the increase in antioxidants and the decrease in lipid peroxidation may be utilized in hepatoprotective therapies [ 83 , 84 , 85 ].…”
