Liposomal Vitamin D3 as an Anti-aging Agent for the Skin

Abstract: Vitamin D3 is an effective skin protective substance to prevent photoaging. Liposomes were used as a carrier to deliver vitamin D3 to improve the stability and to enhance the treatment effect of vitamin D3. The stability of vitamin D3 liposomes, average cumulative penetration, and retention of vitamin D3 in the skin were then evaluated and compared with free vitamin D3. Finally, the treatment effect of vitamin D3 liposomes in a rat photoaging model was appraised and Haematoxylin-Eosin (H&E) staining was us… Show more

“…The ethanol is removed by rotary evaporation. 9 Examples of this preparation method are given in Table 1. UDL has been used for vitiligo therapy. 38 In this investigation, liposomes were prepared by ethanol injection and thin-film hydration.…”

“…Both conditions stimulate inflammation and tumorigenesis, which unleash several reactions that promote photoaging since it alters the production of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interleukin-2 (IL-2), as well as skin cancer by the mutation of the p53 suppressor gene leading the activation of ROS. [8][9][10] Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs in areas barely exposed to the sun. Melanoma tumors are found mainly on the back of men and the legs of women.…”

“…Some examples are the 86% e.e. found by Bi and collaborators for vitamin D3 entrapped in liposomal vesicles about 100 nm in size to be used as an anti-aging agent for the skin [16]; a 97% e.e. found by Qu and coworkers for vitamin E encapsulated in nanoliposomes about 230 nm in size to be embedded into a chitosan hydrogel and used as a tissue-engineered scaffold [57]; an 82% e.e.…”

“…In another work of Bi and collaborators, a liposomal vitamin D3 formulation to be used as skin anti-aging agent was produced by means of the TFH and EI techniques obtaining, with the last method, more homogeneous vesicles (92 nm in size and 80% e.e. of vitamin D3) but always in small volumes (100 mL) [16].…”
