Synthesis and applications of adsorbents containing cyclodextrinsCyclodextrins (CDs), which possess a hydrophobic cavity, have a remarkable capacity to form inclusion complexes with various molecules through host-guest interactions. It is well known that the usefulness of CDs is due to the combination of the inclusion properties and structural features of these molecules. CDs are used extensively in separation science because CD-complexation phenomena offer a procedure of choice for separation of compounds and extraction processes, and provide a useful and versatile tool for protecting the environment. The present review shows the advantages accruing from the use of adsorbents containing cyclodextrins, in particular in chromatographic separations and in waste water treatment. The main goal of this review is to provide a summary of the information concerning the synthesis of materials containing CDs and to give a general overview of the different possible applications of CDs as sorbents in the field of separation techniques. Recent and continuing interest in these adsorbents is evident from the number of papers that appear each year in the literature.

In this study, biomass‐derived Glux was used as a monomer in the polymerization of a novel semi‐aromatic polyethersulfone and polyester. The characterization of the synthesized polymers was carried out by means of MALDI‐TOF and NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. These two polymers were tested as sorbent phases of two families of pollutants (benzene derivatives and pesticides) in water. The analysis of the target hydrophilic pollutants was successfully achieved using high performance liquid chromatography meanwhile gas chromatography was applied for the detection of the hydrophobic pollutants. The adsorption data demonstrate that the novel polyethersulfone based on Glux can effectively remove the studied organic pollutants (polar and non polar, 90% to 100%) at environmental concentration (tested concentration: 1 mg L−1) simultaneously when present in mixtures.

Macroporous polyamines containing ␤-cyclodextrin (␤-CD) are used for the recovery of various organic pollutants from aqueous solutions. Several insoluble polyamines with various degrees of ␤-CD were prepared. Studies concerning the sorption kinetics, the effect of pollutant concentration, pH of the solutions, and ␤-CD content are presented here. The results of sorption experiments show that these sorbents exhibit high sorption capacities toward substituted phenolic derivatives. The mechanism of sorption is both physical adsorption in the resin polymer network through acid-base interactions, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding due to the amino groups and the formation of an inclusion complex due to the ␤-CD molecules through host-guest interactions, and hydrophobic interactions such as guest-guest interactions.
