Liquid Extraction of Thiophene from n-Paraffins (C8, C10 or C12) Using Two Ionic Solvents [Mebupy][BF4] or [Emim][CH3SO4]

Abstract: Desulfurization of gasoline and diesel models is investigated through liquid-liquid extraction of thiophene (C 4 H 4 S) from n-para n compounds. Ionic solvents of 4-methyl-N-butylpyridinium tetra uoroborate [mebupy][BF 4 ] or 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate [emim][CH 3 SO 4 ] as selective solvents, have been evaluated at 313.15 K and atmospheric pressure of 101.3 kPa. Experimental liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for the six ternary systems of n-octane, n-decane or n-dodecane + thiophene + [mebup… Show more

“…The density of imidazolium-based ILs, for example, increases with increasing anion molecular weight, but it decreases with the increasing length of the alkyl-substituted chain attached to the cation or by inserting a third alkyl substituent on the imidazolium ring at the C2 position . ILs have been accepted as a new class of “green” solvents for practical applications including chemical and catalytic reactions, liquid and gas separation processes, cleaning processes, biotechnology and nanotechnology, fuel cells, and electrolytes . The tunable solvent feature is probably the most appealing since it enables the desired property to be altered depending on the application by slightly altering the structure of the cation or anion.…”
