Prior research has shown that orthographic Singlish often occurs with textese features in asynchronous Internet registers. This article presents findings from multiparty chats among Singapore youths, which suggest that a principle of decipherability governs the textisms based on standardized Singapore English and Singlish. Most textisms were contractive due to the pressure to abbreviate messages to keep up with the rapidity of multiparty chats, although orthographic Singlish was largely not abbreviated. The results indicate that the preponderance of abbreviation in standardized Singapore English and the relative dearth of abbreviation may be explained by the effects of ‘abbreviation asymmetry’ as an enregistered variable distinguishing the two Englishes.

The article is devoted to the comparative study of linguistic changes in the critical historical periods when radical political, socio-economic, cultural and ideological reformation causes underlying changes in the public consciousness, language and the conditions of its functioning. One of the historical periods is associated with the activities of Peter I and the transformation of all government-controlled spheres as well as that of society. The discourse of managerial public administration and records management becomes the one that rapidly changes during this historical period, and it is that discourse that encourages the development of new means of expression, genres and speaking etiquette. In the 21 st century, the Internet discourse can be considered a special information and communication environment that develops specific mechanisms and means of interaction between communicants. These two types of discourse, each in their own time, become unique experimental platforms where new phenomena are being discussed and new genres introduced, which sets conditions for the activation of their donor function to feed other types of discourse. Artikkeli käsittelee diskurssianalyysin avulla sitä, miten niin kutsutut diginatiivit mediat merkityksellistävät itseään ja journalismiaan toimintaansa kuvailevilla ”about”-sivuillaan. Artikkelissa käsitellään neljää aineistosta tunnistettua diskurssia: identiteettidiskurssi, niche-diskurssi, verkosto-diskurssi ja muutosdiskurssi. Diskursseja analysoidaan sosiaalisen median mediaekologian ja keskustelevan journalismiperinteen kontekstissa. Artikkelin keskeinen tulos on, että analysoitujen diginatiivien medioiden käsitys journalismista vastaa keskustelevan journalismin kriteerejä, ja että tämän tyyppisen journalismin voi väittää sopivan ”perinteistä” journalismia paremmin internetiin ja sosiaalisen median alustoille. Keskustelevuus viittaa subjektiiviseen tyyliin sekä tulkintojen ja analyysien painottumiseen objektiivisen faktaraportoinnin sijaan tai sen ohella. Nämä puolestaan voivat edesauttaa ”intiimin” suhteen muodostumista niin yleisön, toimittajien ja mediaorganisaatioiden kuin yleisön ja maailman tapahtumien välille. Voi ennakoida, että tämän tyyppinen journalismi vahvistuu tulevaisuudessa, ja että diginatiivien medioiden journalismikäsitys edustaa journalismin mahdollista tulevaisuutta.
