Liquid−Liquid Equilibrium in Systems with an Ionic Liquid: Experimental Data for an Example of the Biphasic Acid Scavenging Utilizing Ionic Liquids Process

Abstract: Experimental results (and a correlation) are presented for the liquid−liquid equilibrium of an example for the Biphasic Acid Scavenging utilizing Ionic Liquids (BASIL) process: for the binary system (butylacetate + 1-methyl imidazolium chloride) and for the partitioning of 1-butanol and 1-methyl imidazole to the coexisting liquid phases at temperatures from (363 to 373) K.

“…The ILs such as 1methylimidazolium chloride (MIMCl, 98%), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIMCl, >98%), and 1-butyl-3methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl, 99%) were purchased from Iolitec GmbH. These ILs are solid at room temperature and their melting points are 86, 46 89, 47 and 70 °C, 48 respectively. Ultrapure water (Millipore) was used and the pH of the dispersions were adjusted to 4 or 10 with HCl or KOH, respectively.…”

“…A more modern approach can rely on the use of ionic liquid formation to scavenge the inorganic acid as a biphasic liquid. 35 Relying on high avidity of certain moieties to react, some scavenger strategies use an insoluble polymer (a resin) coupled with a reactive entity to scavenge specific reagent that could thus be used in large excess. For example, an aldehyde moiety can be couple onto a resin to scavenge excess of reactive amine.…”

“…To avoid such phenomenon, hydrogen‐less amine can be used in excess, like triethylamine, to scavenge the HCl molecules produced. A more modern approach can rely on the use of ionic liquid formation to scavenge the inorganic acid as a biphasic liquid 35 …”
