Liquid‐Phase Exfoliation of Hexagonal Boron Nitride into Boron Nitride Nanosheets in Common Organic Solvents with Hyperbranched Polyethylene as Stabilizer

Abstract: Large‐scale production of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) is of significant importance for their various applications. Herein, a facile strategy is well demonstrated for BNNS fabrication via liquid‐phase exfoliation of bulk hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) in common organic solvents with hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE) as stabilizer. Synthesized from commercially abundant ethylene stock via a simple process, the HBPE is found to effectively promote h‐BN exfoliation both in tetrahydrofuran and chloroform under… Show more

“…The LPE method consists of separating the layers by applying a gentler shear stress to the raw powder material (instead of the extreme mechanical force used during mechanical exfoliation), by immersing it in a liquid solvent exposed to ultrasonication . Depending on the interplane van der Waals forces of each material and the thickness desired, the power, time and type of solvent used during the sonication process should be adjusted . After sonication, a centrifugation step is necessary to separate thin flakes from bigger (useless) particles.…”

“…Up to now, a large number of organic solvents have been explored for liquid exfoliation process of h-BN, including nonvolatile solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, dimethyl-formanmide, dimethyl sulfoxide [20][21][22], and volatile solvents such as chloroform, isopropyl alcohol, t-butyl alcohol, etc. [23][24][25]. As the most abundant solvent resource on Earth, water is also found to assist with exfoliation and dispersion of BNNSs [26,27].…”

“…Ye et al exfoliated bulk h-BN powder in chloroform under sonication using hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE) as stabilizer. They obtained stable dispersion of h-BNNS in chloroform [ 22 ]. Griffin et al used an aqueous solution of sodium chlorate combined with ultrasonic power to exfoliate h-BN.…”
