Metal-doped Me n þ -TiO 2 (where Me is Cu þ , Mn 2 þ , Cr 2 þ , Co 2 þ , Ni 2 þ , Fe 3 þ ) anatase powders and heterogeneous systems Me n þ -TiO 2 -4-pentyl-4 0 -cyanobiphenyl have been studied by FTIR spectroscopy method. TiO 2 samples have been produced by thermal hydrolysis of titanium chloride and as their spectroscopic data revealed, have different types of surface active centers and the amount of hydroxyl and hydrate covering. Doped metal cations increase a variety of possible active centers, disturbing surface OH-groups by coordination or ionic bonding. 5CB molecules, approaching TiO 2 surface, displace adsorbed water molecules and can create hydrogen bonds of -CN. . .HO-Ti and p-electrons. . .HO-Ti types. The influence of metal cations is a polarizing effect on 5CB molecules, which increases in a following row Cu þ < Mn 2 þ < Cr 2 þ < Co 2 þ < Ni 2 þ < Fe 3 þ . This is in a perfect agreement with the polarizing activity of these cations. At that 5CB molecules change their orientation and possess some deformations, which is confirmed by the corresponding changes in spectral parameters of 5CB deformation modes.

The synthesis of titanium(IV) oxide nanopowders modified by sulfur with the help of sol-gel method has been described. The structure of surface layers has been investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis, a scanning electron microscopy, IR-spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The possible mechanism of powders surface modification by sulfur has been shown, as well as the dependence of specific surface on sulfur content.

The three-phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene catalysed by nanosized gold over titania was investigated in a slurry. Simultaneous in situ ATR-FTIR monitoring of the liquid phase and at the solid/liquid catalyst interface identified the species adsorbed on the catalyst and those in the liquid phase during the reaction. Nitrosobenzene was not detected analytically while the spectroscopic measurements strongly indicated phenylhydroxylamine as an intermediate reacting before desorbing from the catalyst surface. Under the same reaction conditions, azobenzene and hydrazobenzene were identified as intermediates during the hydrogenation of azoxybenzene to aniline. When nitrosobenzene or phenylhydroxylamine was alternately fed as reactant, azoxybenzene was produced via a disproportionation route. With the former, azoxybenzene was not further reduced by hydrogen because nitrosobenzene deactivated the catalyst. Combined with H(2) uptake, the spectroscopic measurements provided new insights into the reaction mechanism of the gold catalysed hydrogenation of nitrobenzene and an update of the corresponding kinetics.
