Liquid Water Transport in Polylactide Homo and Graft Copolymers

Abstract: The successful design of new biodegradable, renewable resource plastics as replacements to commodity barrier plastics would benefit from an accurate measurement of sorption and diffusion of liquids. In this study, the diffusion of liquid water in amorphous polylactide [PLA] and a PLA graft copolymer, poly(1,5-cyclooctadiene-co-5-norbornene-2-methanol-graft-dl-lactide) [PCNL], was examined with time-resolved Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy. Non-Fickian behavior wa… Show more

“…This result suggests a Fickian behavior in which the diffusion of water is controlled by the concentration gradient between the centre and the outside of the polymer matrix. Whilst non-Fickian processes related to polymer relaxation are common in glassy materials (Davis et al 2011), this is an expected behavior for water sorption in rubbery polymers. With experimental temperature above the glass transition temperature, polymers are able to respond almost instantaneously to the stress caused by water ingress, preventing the observation of polymer relaxation phenomena within the experimental time scale (Davis et al 2012;Russo et al 2007).…”

“…The water vapour permeability of PLA is indeed equal to 0.4 g m/(m 2 day atm) (Davis, Theryo, Hillmyer, Cairncross, & Yossef, 2011) or 42.5 times higher than the values for polyethylene and its water solubility can be as high as 1.2 % by weight, but they are perfectly sufficient for this application.…”

“…These observations corresponded to the results of the mass change measurements and differential thermal analysis, as presented previously. The m(OH) absorption band of water shifted to a lower wave number in water-treated films 1, 1s (Figure 9), 2, and 2s from approximately 3656-3660 to 3652-3653 cm 21 after the 1st day and to approximately 3651-3652 cm 21 after 7 days of immersion. “…The main changes in the FTIR spectra of the PDLLA films, which were immersed in water after vacuum drying, were seen in the intensities and locations of the peaks created by the IR absorptions of the OH bonds of the water molecules absorbed into the polymer matrix (3651-3657 and 1625-1630 cm 21 ), 22,23 the OH bonds of the polymer (3547-3569 cm 21 ), 24 and the C@O bonds of the polymer (1748-1765 cm 21 and the overtone at 3504-3509 cm 21 ). 24,25 The increase in the intensities and the shifting of the bands were the most significant during the first day of immersion, after which the positions of the bands moved only slightly or remained unaltered.…”
