Show more

“…However, in the first case, comparisons between the fish assemblages should be taken with caution, due to the difference in the sampling effort and method. In the second case, the sampling was more comparable with this study, and differences in richness and composition may be due to less marine influence due to mouth dynamics (Gómez-González et al, 2012). Although it has been pointed out that the use of a single fishing gear results in a biased sample of the assemblage (Clement et al, 2014), in estuarine wetlands the use of cast nets is highly effective for achieving a broad taxonomic representation in several shallow habitats, and with accurate estimate of abundances (Sheaves et al, 2007;Sheaves & Johnston, 2009).…”

“…The Gulf of Tehuantepec in the Mexican Southern Pacific is one of the most important fishing areas (Bakun et al, 1999;Ortega-García et al, 2000;Wilkinson et al, 2009). This region has an extensive belt of lagoon-estuarine systems surrounded by mangroves that shelters one of the richest areas for fish fauna in the Tropical Mexican Pacific (Gómez-González et al, 2012;González-Acosta et al, 2017). The environmental differences between the geomorphic habitats that integrate these systems make them good models to test the spatial effect of its characteristics on biotic assemblages.…”

“…In addition, we performed an extensive literature review for records of continental fishes of Chiapas. The checklists previously published by Lozano-Vilano and Contreras-Balderas (1987), Rodiles-Hernández (2005), Rodiles-Hernández et al (2005), Espinosa-Pérez et al (2011), and Velázquez-Velázquez et al (2013) were taken as the basis for this work and were supplemented with publications by Lazcano-Barrero and Vogt (1992), Tapia-García et al (1998), Rodiles-Hernández et al (1999), Lozano-Vilano et al (2007) and Gómez-González et al (2012, 2015) who developed lists for particular regions of the state. We also included Castro-Aguirre et al (1999) and Miller et al (2005).…”

The first comprehensive publication on continental fishes of Chiapas was made by Velasco-Colín (1976), who reported 74 species distributed across 28 families.…”

“…Although the demersal fish fauna in the GT is relatively well characterized (Bianchi, 1991;Martínez-Muñoz et al, 2016;Núñez-Orozco et al, 2013;Tapia-García, 1998), studies focused on coastal lagoons are rather scarce, despite their importance as nurseries and feeding sites for many commercial species (Contreras, 2010). The information available on the composition of estuarine ichthyofauna in the GT is restricted to some inventories in the northern region (Chávez, 1979;Tapia-García et al, 1998) and the Biosphere Reserve "La Encrucijada" (Díaz-Ruiz et al, 2006;Gómez-González et al, 2012).…”
