Listening to patients' needs to improve their subjective quality of life

Abstract: Meeting self-perceived social needs, beyond symptoms reduction, seems to be of particular importance for ensuring a better quality of life for people with mental disorders. If the main goal of mental health care is to improve the quality of life of users, a policy of actively addressing patient-rated needs should be implemented.

“…As many diverse factors influence QoL, there is a need for a comprehensive assessment of QoL and a comprehensive approach to service provision (Vanagas et al 2006). Treatment should be based on clients' needs (rather than what is supplied or on offer), as there is a strong link between clients' self-rated needs and their subjective QoL (Lasalvia et al 2005). If the needs mentioned by clients themselves are appropriately addressed, an improvement in their subjective QoL can be expected.…”

“…The subjective aspect of QoL, especially in the field of mental health, has achieved importance in the measurement of therapeutic results, which facilitated a gradual shift in clinical focus from identifying a cure to enhancing QoL [11]. Taking into account that substance dependence is a chronic disorder, it is important to establish a model of longitudinal monitoring, which helps to improve communication between patients and healthcare professionals [12]. …”
