This collection showcases a multivalent approach to the study of literary multilingualism, embodied in contemporary Nordic literature. While previous approaches to literary multilingualism have tended to take a textual or authorship focus, this book advocates for a theoretical perspective which reflects the multiplicity of languages in use in contemporary literature emerging from increased globalization and transnational interaction. Drawing on a multimodal range of examples from contemporary Nordic literature, these eighteen chapters illustrate the ways in which multilingualism is dynamic rather than fixed, resulting from the interactions between authors, texts and readers as well as between literary and socio-political institutions. This book highlights the processes by which borders are formed within the production, circulation and reception of literature, and, in turn, the impact of these borders on issues around cultural, linguistic and national belonging. Introducing an innovative approach to the study of multilingualism in literature, this collection will be of particular interest to students and researchers in literary studies, cultural studies and multilingualism.

In the Netherlands, immigrant and ethnic-minority writing generally falls into three overlapping categories: postcolonial literature, Indies writing and what is nowadays mostly called migration literature -the work by writers whose presence in the Netherlands is somehow connected to the labour migration of the 1960s. This contribution describes the appearance of this literature, its initial exoticisation and the celebration of its (and its writers') supposed 'otherness' , the growth of a more serious interest in this work within the mainstream literary field as well as within academic circles and, finally, the acceptance of migrant and ethnic-minority writing, on the basis of its literary merits, as Dutch literature.

French banlieue literature written by immigrant and ‘post-migration’ writers often involves a paradoxical mix of both ‘high’ and ‘low’ language varieties – use of slang alternating with poetic utterances – as well as references to popular culture alternating with ‘high culture’, which may range from American movies to intertextual references to canonized authors. What is the extratextual message of this intriguing mix, what do the predominantly young writers aim at, and what audience do they address in this way? By distinguishing four different strategies, this article argues that this hybrid blend is intended to act as a signal to the French reader, and thus indirectly to publishers and critics, that the writers conform to national standards and values, show full integration into French society, and therefore are entitled to claim a legitimate place in the French literary field.
