Literature review on disruption recovery in the supply chain

Abstract: HAL is a multidisciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labora… Show more

“…Research indicates that resilient firms have mechanisms for dealing with disruptions, enabling such firms to reap superior performance outcomes (Wong et al, 2019;Yu et al, 2019). While research interest in resilience is growing (e.g., Pettit et al, 2019;Ivanov et al, 2017), knowledge of the operational resilience construct is limited in two important ways. First, besides the recognition that the resilience construct is not completely understood (Manhart et al, 2020;Pettit et al, 2019), previous research is limited to the study of the construct at supply chain network and firm levels.…”

“…For a recent review of literature on supply chain disruptions and recovery see Ivanov et al (2017). Research has investigated how to optimize supply chain coordination (Sawik 2014) with promising results, but a single disruption can propagate with devastating effects, and little is known about the propagation phenomenon from a systemic perspective (Ghadge et al 2011;Ivanov et al 2014a;2014b).…”

“…First, we designed a model that radically reshapes the traditional newsvendor model. While cost and profit are always 42 J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f objectives of concern, today's modern supply chains have led supply chain managers to redirect their attention to supply chain disruption, risk propagation, and severity (Craighead et al, 2007;Ivanov et al, 2017a;Hosseini et al, 2019b). As far as we are aware, this is the first major study to clarify and measure the construct of risk severity through the lens of risk propagation and the ripple effect.…”

“…The ripple effect is defined as the spread of disruption and the resulting impact on performance throughout a supply network (Ivanov, 2017). While it is similar to the bullwhip effect, the ripple effect is often characterized by low-frequency/high-impact events, a lasting impact on supply chain performance, as well as permanent and temporary structural changes to the network (Ivanov et al, 2017a). Put simply, the ripple effect is a propagation of disruption throughout a supply network.…”
