The Betic‐Rif orogen is a key region to understand the evolution of the plate boundary between Africa and Iberia/Europe. This study focuses on the Flysch Complex, which is considered the sedimentary cover of a domain originally positioned between the Iberian and Alboran margins. Based on stratigraphic and depositional evolution constraints, evidence for salt tectonics, combined with new apatite fission‐tracks (AFT) and (U‐Th‐Sm)/He ages from the Flysch Complex and the Subbetic Zone, we propose a geodynamic interpretation for the formation of the Betic Cordillera, accounting for moderate N‐directed transport of the Flysch Complex and synchronous exhumation between External and Internal Zones of the Betic. Early contraction between Africa and Iberia/Europe is reflected in the Cretaceous Flysch basin by a prolonged period of residence in the partial annealing zone for AFT and onset of foreland subsidence at 50 Ma. This stage lasted until the Early to Middle Miocene (20–15 Ma), marked by the rapid succession, in less than 5 Ma, of the deposition of Cenozoic flysch and their rapid exhumation. This event is interpreted to reflect the W‐directed retreating mantle delamination between Africa and Iberia margins at the origin of the collapse of the proto‐Betic orogenic domain and formation of the Alboran domain.

Conocer mejor las unidades tectónicas occidentales alpujárrides es importante para la comprensión de la evolución de las Béticas, particularmente de su frente orogénico alpino. Por ello se analiza la estratigrafía y el contexto geológico de la unidad de Yunquera. Esta unidad es una escama tectónica cabalgada por el Complejo Alpujárride del que forma parte. A su vez cabalga a la Dorsal y esta lo hace al Subbético. Por este cabalgamiento, la base de la unidad se encuentra muy biselada de manera que en su parte norte corresponde a niveles estratigráficos altos, conservándose otros más bajos al sur. Parte de ese cepillamiento basal pudo también producirse durante el corte oblicuo que sufrió la Dorsal que en ese sector quedó localmente laminada por completo. Todo ello se produjo en el contexto del progresivo avance de la Zona Interna hacia el oeste, el cual no se hizo de forma homogénea, sino según segmentos, con mayor desplazamiento de los más meridionales. Aunque estas deformaciones pueden separarse en varias etapas, realmente se produjeron en un cuadro de evolución continua que abarcó desde finales del Oligoceno al Burdigaliense. Por sus características litológicas, la unidad de Yunquera formó originalmente parte de la unidad alpujárride superior, generalmente conocida como unidad de Jubrique o Los Reales (este nombre se usa cuando se considera también a las peridotitas situadas en su base), cuyos afloramientos comprenden prácticamente todo el sector occidental de dicho complejo. Esta correlación de unidades permite una mejor comprensión de la estructura y evolución geológica del complejo Alpujárride. Por su parte, la unidad del Saucillo (que se encuentra afectada por una zona de falla formada durante el estiramiento de la Dorsal, en la que también hay restos tectónicos de otras unidades) es claramente relacionable con las llamadas Unidades Intermedias, tectónicamente situadas entre los complejos Alpujárride y Maláguide.

The timing and process of exhumation of the subcontinental peridotites of the Gibraltar Arc (Ronda, Beni Bousera) have been repeatedly discussed in the last decades. Here we report on high-grade marbles that crop out around the central and southeastern parts of the Beni Bousera antiform of northern Rif. Instead of being mere intercalations in the granulitic envelope (kinzigites) of the peridotites, as currently admitted, they are localized between the kinzigites and the gneisses of the overlying Filali Unit. The marbles occur in the form of minor, dismembered units in a ~30 to 300 m-thick Filali-Beni Bousera ductile shear zone (FBBSZ). They display silicate-rich dolomitic marbles, sandy-conglomeratic calcareous marbles and thinly bedded marble with interleaved phyllites, which demonstrates their sedimentary origin. A stratigraphic or tectonic unconformable contact onto the kinzigites can be locally observed. Pebbles or detrital grains include K-feldspar, quartz, and zircon. Prograde metamorphic minerals are forsterite, Mg-Al-spinel, geikielite, phlogopite, scapolite, diopside, and titanite, which characterize a peak HT-LP metamorphism close to 700-750°C, 4-7 kbar, comparable to that of the overlying Filali gneisses and of the late migmatitic stage of the kinzigites. Second-order structures within the FBBSZ are northwestward ductile thrusts, which determine kinzigite horses thrust over the marbles. Within the latter, NNE-trending folds are conspicuous. The mylonitic structures are crosscut by late, northward dipping normal faults. Varied correlations with comparable settings in the other West Mediterranean Alpine belts are discussed. We propose to correlate the Beni Bousera marbles with the Triassic carbonates deposited over the crustal units of the Alpujarrides-Sebtides. The Triassic protoliths may have been deposited onto the kinzigites or carried as allochthons over a detachment during the Early Jurassic in the frame of the hyper-extension of the Alboran Domain continental crust, as observed in the Adria and Europe inverted margins of the Western Alps. In either of these hypotheses, the currently prevailing paradigm of “hot” exhumation of the Rif–Betic peridotites during the Alpine orogeny would be reconsidered.
