Litter production and decomposition of mangrove in the Northern Coast of Aceh Besar district, Aceh province

Abstract: Mangrove vegetation plays an important role and supplier of organic matter derived from litter fall and litter decomposition The purposes of this research was to obtain the productivity of mangrove vegetation by analyzing the litter fall, decomposition coefficient, and percentage of litter decomposed in the northern coast of Aceh Besar District. The research used purpossive sampling method to determine the 6 stations devided into 2 substations (landward and seaward). This research was conducted in July to Sept… Show more

“…Station 5 located in mangrove un rehabilitated contained more litter production than mangrove rehabilitated. [29] informed that the mangrove litter production in Northern coast of Aceh was 97.37 gm -2 day -1 indicated high litter production in mangrove unrehabilitated, and litter was the highest contribution of organic carbon in the soil. Moreover, [38] mentioned that enzymatic activity is associated with habitat characteristics i.e.…”

“…and Avicennia sp. are commonly find in this mangrove ecosystem [29]. Several studies on cellulolytic bacteria associated with mangrove habitat have been studied [26,30,9,31], however there is no data and information about the cellulolytic bacteria and their activity in research area.…”

“…While, the litterfall of young R. mucronata was relatively high (5.22 t ha -1 year -1 ) (Wang'ondu et al 2014). Litter of mangrove forest had fast decomposition (Dewiyanti et al 2019) and carbon sequestration in mangrove soil and vegetation biomass was combined with carbon fluxes via litterfall (Rovai et al 2021). In addition, high litter decomposition rate can cycle back the accumulation of soil carbon to the soil layer (Salmo et al 2013) and it plays an important role in the ecosystem services, such as nutrient cycling and carbon storage (Rocha et al 2022).…”
