Litterfall release, vegetative, and reproductive phenology investigation of Heritiera fomes Buch-Ham in the Sundarbans mangrove forests, Bangladesh: relationship with environmental variables

Abstract: The study of vegetative and reproductive phenology through litterfall collection of mangrove species is vital for mangrove management and restoration in climate change situation. This study was carried out to investigate vegetative and reproductive phenological pattern of Heritiera fomes using litterfall data in the Sundarbans, Bangladesh for a period of 24 months. Leaf and stipule litterfall released throughout the year with a distinct periodic pattern. Vegetative litterfall (981.9-1211.3 g/sq m/yr) contribut… Show more

“…Organic matter from litterfall could increase CO 2 emissions (Attermeyer et al, 2018); this strongly correlates with aquatic CO 2 efflux (Gruca-Rokosz et al, 2017). Our efflux assessment during the dry season was simultaneous with the peak time for litterfall (Azad et al, 2020).In addition, mangroves that are characterized by anoxic conditions create low dissolved oxygen (DO) environments and thus may be a source of greenhouse gases (Page, 2022). Comparing with other studies, the average aquatic CO 2 efflux of the non-silvofishery pond (across the two seasons) was lower than the value recorded for a pond in China (Xiao et al, 2021).…”
