Little engagement of attention by salient distractors defined in a different dimension or modality to the visual search target

Abstract: Singleton distractors may inadvertently capture attention, interfering with the task at hand. The underlying neural mechanisms of how we prevent or handle distractor interference remain elusive. Here, we varied the type of salient distractor introduced in a visual search task: the distractor could be defined in the same (shape) dimension as the target, a different (color) dimension, or a different (tactile) modality (intra‐dimensional, cross‐dimensional, and, respectively, cross‐modal distractor, all matched f… Show more

“…The N2pc component has been extensively studied in visual search over the last decades and has been established as a marker for the spatial allocation of attention in vision (Eimer, 1996(Eimer, , 2014Constant et al, 2023). Similar lateralized ERP components have been discovered for other modalities, such as the N2ac component (Gamble and Luck, 2011) for audition (which we study here) and the N2cc component (also known as the CCN; Katus & Eimer, 2019;Tsai et al, 2023) for tactile modality. Both components are believed to be functional analogs of the N2pc component in their respective sensory modalities -used to index spatial allocation of attention.…”

“…This would be predicted by an extension of the dimension-weighting account, the modality-weighting account (Nasemann et al, 2023; Töllner et al, 2009). A recent study by Tsai et al (2023) has provided evidence toward this prediction for tactile distractors. Comparable to our study, they also show an absence of interference effects of their tactile distractors on visual search, indicating a down-weighting of the tactile modality.…”

“…For instance, the feature-coding system may have become more sensitive to valence-preferred colors, either due to lower level perceptual learning or long-term memory-based biasing of the relevant feature detectors. Therefore, down-scaling of color signals in the priority computation would curtail the potential of items appearing in the valence-preferred color (‘distractor’) to capture attention, because the competition for selection is almost always resolved in favor of the unique shape signal (Allenmark et al, 2019 ; Qiu et al, 2023 ; Tsai et al, 2023 ), making it hard to demonstrate attentional-interference effects.…”
