Livelihood strategies, capital assets, and food security in rural Southwest Ethiopia

Abstract: Households combine capital assets in a process involving human agency and resourcefulness to construct livelihood strategies and generate well-being outcomes. Here, we (1) characterized types of livelihood strategies; (2) determined how different capital assets are associated with different livelihood strategies; and (3) determined how livelihood strategies differed in food security outcomes. We conducted a survey in southwestern Ethiopia and used principal component and cluster analyses. Five types of livelih… Show more

“…A farmer earns through agriculture activities, which in turn affects their aptitude to increase access to food, water, land, and health-related services and thus controls their overall health condition. As previously mentioned, livelihood diversification significantly impacts poverty reduction, food security, and wellbeing [20,23]. Our findings also indicate that a higher diversified livelihood has a profound influence on better physical HRQOL.…”

“…On the other hand, these smallholder farmers are considered to be the group of people most susceptible to environmental challenges (e.g., drought, flood), which affects their income activities and lowers their adaptive aptitude [22]. Hence, rural livelihood diversification is equally important for poverty reduction, food security, and wellbeing [20,23]. However, in Ethiopia, small numbers of farmers are involved in nonfarm or off-farm business activities, with the majority (83%) of them being primarily engaged in farming and only 27% being engaged in nonfarm or off-farm activities [20].…”

“…Moreover, diversification is an obvious approach to manage climatic shocks. Crop diversification and intercropping are used to minimize adverse weather effects and reduce pest attacks [ 25 ]. Apart from the farming aspects, households engage in multiple non-agricultural activities for the sake of income stability.…”

“…As far as we know, the empirical literature in Ethiopia especially in low-land agro-ecology and detailed evidence on food and nutrition security across agricultural seasons, however, is scant. On the other hand, the literature on food security has mainly focused on cross-sectional data in Ethiopian context (Beyene 2015;Motbainor et al 2016;Dam Lam et al 2017;Mulugeta et al 2018;Habtewold 2018;Manlosa et al 2019). This study will therefore contribute to this research gap by analysing data collected from smallholder rural households during pre-harvest and post-harvest seasons in the low-land agroecology in Eastern Ethiopia.…”
