“…The stomach ended at the pyloric sphincter and led directly into the duodenal ampulla, a dilated sac initiating the small intestine in the manner described for a variety of other mysticetes and odontocetes (Weber, 1885;Turner, 1889;Jungklaus, 1898;Slijper, 1962a;Kleinenberg et al, 1969;Hosokawa and Kamiya, 1971;Takahashi and Yamasaki, 1972;Berzin, 1972;Green, 1972;Pilleri and Gihr, 1972;Yamasaki et al, 1975;Zhou et al, 1982). Histologically, Hosokawa and Kamiya (1971), writing on the blue, fin, sei, and sperm whales, found that the proximal half of the ampulla's mucosa was structurally very similar to the pyloric chamber, whereas the distal half more closely resembled that of the duodenum proper.…”
